This guide will help you choose the right headset, microphone element and radio adapter.

Bose QuietComfort with HamSet Clip-On Mic

The HamSet Clip-On microphone allows compatible Bose QuietComfort headphones to be used for SSB and amateur radio without permanently modifying the headset.
The microphone can be attached when needed and removed after operation.
Compatible families include:

2. Choose Your Microphone
There is no microphone element that is automatically better than the others.
The best choice depends on your natural voice, your preferred transmitted sound, your radio and the amount of equalization you intend to use.
Dynamic Standard
Natural, balanced and versatile
The Dynamic Standard provides a fuller and more balanced sound, with more energy in the low and low-mid part of the voice than the DX version.
It is the most flexible HamSet dynamic microphone and can be adapted to many different voices through the radio equalizer.
Recommended for:
- General SSB operation
- Natural everyday audio
- Ragchewing
- Naturally bright voices
- Operators who use TX equalization
- Contest stations requiring one versatile microphone
Sound character:
- Natural, rounded and balanced.
Mic Gain:
- It has the normal output level of a professional dynamic microphone and generally requires more Mic Gain than an electret capsule.
- Its required gain is normally similar to the Dynamic DX.


Dynamic DX
More presence with less equalization
The Dynamic DX emphasizes the upper-mid frequencies that contribute most to articulation and intelligibility.
Compared with the Standard version, it has less low-frequency warmth and a more forward sound.
Recommended for:
- Contesting
- DXing
- Pile-ups
- Noisy or crowded bands
- Naturally deep or dark voices
- Radios with limited TX equalization
Sound character:
- Clear, forward and focused on intelligibility.
Mic Gain:
- The Dynamic DX has approximately the same electrical output as the Dynamic Standard.
- Its brighter sound does not mean that it requires more Mic Gain. The main difference is its frequency balance, not its output level.
Electret
Higher output and the widest response
The Electret provides a higher output level, extended low-frequency response and a fuller overall sound.
It requires bias voltage from the radio or from a suitable HamSet adapter.
Recommended for:
- Operators looking for fuller and warmer audio
- Radios designed for electret microphones
- Icom and other compatible transceivers
- Users comfortable with TX equalization
- Stations without RF feedback problems
Sound character:
- Full, sensitive and extended at both ends of the spectrum.
Mic Gain:
- The Electret normally requires less Mic Gain than the Dynamic Standard or Dynamic DX because of its higher output.
- Excessive Mic Gain can easily produce overdrive, distortion or unnecessary ALC activity.
Important:
Electret microphones are generally more sensitive to RF feedback and surrounding noise than cardioid dynamic elements. Compatibility and bias voltage must always be verified.

Which Microphone Should You Start With?

These are starting points, not absolute rules. The same microphone can sound different depending on the operator’s voice, microphone distance, TX bandwidth and radio settings.
A Note About Mic Gain
Mic Gain does not change the tonal character of a microphone. It only determines how strongly the microphone signal drives the transmitter input.
Do not choose a microphone only because it produces a higher output.
The correct Mic Gain setting depends on:
- Your voice level
- Microphone distance
- Radio input sensitivity
- TX bandwidth
- Equalizer settings
- Compression or speech processor settings
Dynamic Standard and Dynamic DX normally require similar gain settings. The Electret generally requires less.
Always start with moderate gain and increase it only until the radio reaches the correct modulation level without distortion or excessive ALC activity.

3. Choose the Correct Radio Adapter
Always use the correct HamSet adapter for your radio.
Two radios may use the same type of connector but have different wiring and electrical requirements. Connector shape alone does not guarantee compatibility.
HamSet adapters are available for the main amateur radio brands and interfaces, including:

The adapter must match both the radio model and the selected microphone type, especially when using an electret element that requires bias power.
